Aadi Krithigai - Six Krittika Maidens Day

The legend goes that the six sparks of fire from Shiva's third eye fell upon a lake. The six sparks turned into six divine male children cradled by the lotus flowers of the lake. These six children were nursed by the six Krittika maidens. The children were later embraced by the divine mother Goddess Parvati and coalesced to become a single child - Muruga.

The Aadi Krithigai day honors the divine nature of the mother-child relationship. This is in honor of the six Krittika maidens who looked after the child Muruga as if they were his real mothers. Due to the motherly affection of the Krithika maidens, Muruga is also named after them as Karthikeya.

In all the Aaru Padai Vedu (Six Battle Camps of Muruga) Temples, special poojas are held and devotees walk and come and offer kavadi for Muruga.

Being the Lord of Compassion himself, Muruga grants you the caring energy to heal your relationships on the Aadi Krithigai day.
